Courage: An Open Response to Glenn Beck

“Courage” has been a reoccurring theme of Beck’s for several months now. The courage to take a stand and do the right thing because it is the right thing even when the people around you (or the rest of the world) isn’t. The courage to do what is right even if you personal may pay a price for it (whether it be lose face in front of friends or co-workers, lose your job, lose something of value to you, etc).

During his TV show on Wednesday April 27th Beck showed three disturbingly gruesome videos:

1. A fight between patrons in a diner style restaurant (looks like a Waffle House or an IHOP but didn’t say) over syrup.

2. The beating of a woman in a McDonalds, reportedly because she gave another woman’s boyfriend a look the other woman didn’t like, to the point the victim lays on the floor having convulsions.

3. A man standing on the street outside a store in NYC, someone runs up to him holding a large revolver and shoots him twice point-blank.

Beck’s point is that no one out of all the people watching stepped up and came to the aid of the people involved.

1. In the syrup video patrons continue don with their meals as the melee ensues around them. A few people (employees?) eventually try to break up the fight but only half heartedly even though one of the fighters is clearly having the advantage over the other fighter (not to mention there are children around).

2. In the McDonalds video an employee tries tepidly to break up the fight but doesn’t succeed. When the victim is on the floor quivering with convulsions apparently brought on by the attack (whether the beating caused the seizure or she had an underlying condition already is unknown) no one comes to her help. Though there isn’t much you can do for someone having a seizure at least being there is a comfort.

3. After the man was shot (it was reported as a gang attack but mistaken identity (the wrong person) ) he is seen on the ground trying to get up but can’t. Then stops moving altogether.

Meanwhile people come out of the store to see what happened, see the man on the floor, and just stand around. No one tries to help the victim.

These aren’t entirely new scenarios. Events of people being hurt or victims of crime and no one help have been occurring in America since at least the late 60’s. There was the now famous (if that’s the right word) case of a woman being beaten and stabbed repeatedly over the course of several hours on the streets of a very middle class New York City neighborhood. She cried for help throughout the entire ordeal. Residence heard her cries but just closed their windows. That is considered a turning point.

There is also the famous case in the 70’s of a local news crew who stood by and filmed a man set himself on fire in a street corner in Atlanta yet did nothing. Finally someone came running over with a blanket to smother the flames.

MasterPo agrees with Glenn Beck that “humanity” is being lost in America today. And the trend has clearly accelerated of late.

But there is a reality that Beck needs to accept.

One word: Liability.

We have seen time and time again people trying to help, being Good Samaritans, and in fact helping people and saving lives but then getting arrested themselves! Or at a minimum later being sued for millions$$ by the very person (and/or their family) they tried to help.

In the videos he showed in each case yes someone could and should have stepped up to help. But there is great personal risk, not just of becoming a victim yourself, but of the liability. In the McDonalds video if someone had tried to help the convulsing woman that may have caused additional injuries. In the shooting video, suppose one of the bullets had punctured the man’s spine; If you rolled him over try clear his air way and try to put pressure on the wounds you may injure his spinal cord leading to permanent paralysis. In both cases you may have saved the victim’s life but can now be sued for injuries! “Good Samaritan” laws are only a defense, not a Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free card.

MasterPo acknowledges that is the point of Beck’s argument: To do the right thing even at the risk of personal loss because if we don’t help each other we fall apart as a nation and society.

Nevertheless, when the rubber meets the road it takes a great leap of courage in today’s society to risk all that for someone you don’t know.

Perhaps MasterPo has become the jaded, detached person Beck is railing about.

In MasterPo’s own defense there was one circumstance 10 years ago where MasterPo was present at meeting where high level people in the company were talking ‘smack’ about a co-worker who was killed in the Twin Towers on 9/11. MasterPo was disgusted and outraged! But kept quiet for fear of losing the job. It is a badge of shame MasterPo carries to this day.

To that extent, MasterPo will never be silent again.

Gold: A Misunderstood Metal

With the remarkable rise in the price of gold over the last 2 years (as of writing this – in spite of the recent pull back) as well as the apparent uncertainties, even declines, in more traditional icons of American economic prowess the yellow metal has once again come to the forefront of interest by both preppers and individual investors. Add to that the boom in ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) and it seems like “gold for the masses” is the order of the day. Consequently almost every preparation blog, book, and podcast devotes quite a bit of time discussing the use of gold (and silver) in a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI event.

And most of them get it wrong.

In terms of preparing for an economic disaster they misunderstand the role of gold (and silver) in a preparation plan. In fact, one of the main arguments against buying gold – that being you can’t eat it - is closer to the real understanding of the purpose of the metal in a survival plan.

Trade?
Barter?

Maybe.

But the primary purpose of owning physical gold is not as a “universal currency” for if/when the dollar collapses. MasterPo highly doubt the supermarket will be accepting gold coins for groceries no matter what the American economy does. That is not to say some form of exchange or barter for gold won’t happen. It surely will. But that isn’t the main reason for owning gold.

The primary purpose for having physical gold is as a store of wealth in shaky economic times. Period.

It is true that if some calamity befell the entire world gold would probably be useless compared to more basic human needs like food. But the likelihood of such a worldwide disaster really is low. It would take something like a nuclear war or asteroid hit or other cataclysmic event for such to come to pass. A massive economic reorganization is a far more likely scenario in terms of national or global calamities. And as such, gold (and silver) will still be of value in whatever new currency systems come out from the aftermath.

And it is true that gold can go down just as easily as any other investment. Though to this argument MasterPo asks: For gold to return well below the $1,000/oz level the dollar would need to soar and the economy to grow soooooo much as to be unrealistic. In the longer term maybe. But not today, tomorrow, and not likely next week.

The exact value of that gold after such an economic event is unknown. But it will surely be far more than whatever the prevailing paper fiat currency is (was) just prior to the event. And that is its function: To store wealth for conversion into a more exchangeable form later.

If you are fortunate there may even be an opportunity to grow your wealth through gold ownership in the times of trouble. But that too should be seen as an alternate benefit of owning gold and not the primary reason.

History proves that physical gold is a viable means of storing wealth when transitioning from one economic reality to another. Far better than whatever paper currency is the normal at the time. The gold mined by the ancient Egyptians, Mayans, Greeks etc still holds value today. Even without the historical context, just melted down it has a high value as a metal.

MasterPo is not suggesting you should be selling everything you have and buy gold. Certainly if it’s a matter of paying the mortgage or buying a gold coin, pay the mortgage first! The future is not at all certain, in spite of recent national and global events. But just as you may be compiling stores of personal supplies, a store of gold or silver is important too so long as you understand the main purpose and not have unrealistic expectations of what you are buying it for.

Hurricane Irene: Observations From The Front Line

As of writing this Hurricane Irene is forecast to hit Long Island starting mid-day tomorrow (Saturday) and last through at least Sunday evening. MasterPo doesn’t know ifheI’ll have power or internet when it comes, though it is now forecast to be 'only' a tropical storm. No one knows for sure.

Opinion various but the main two forecasts show the storm either coming straight across Long Island, literally right through my front yard! Or, steering a little to the West of New York City but still blowing hard and dumping lots of rain all around.

Mayor Bloomberg has issued a “request” (not mandatory, yet)for evacuation from the lower lying areas of the city. And the state Parks Department has issued a mandatory evacuation for the Fire Island towns. That’s not uncommon even for a nor’easter storm.

And at this moment Southside Hospital in Bay Shore is being evacuated as well as new warnings and urges to evacuate in Nassau County.

Nothing can be done about the weather.

It’s been a very long time since the last hurricane hit New York City and Long Island. We get nor’easters every year and we did get a mini-hurricane two years ago in the sprint (winds about 80 mph with is a Cat 1) though it wasn’t labeled a hurricane.

But this is why you prepare!

MasterPo feels very good about his preparations heading into the storm. Sure MasterPo could have/should have done more. But nothing MasterPo can do about it now.

But by comparison to others MasterPo is waaaaaaay a head of the curve!

MasterPo went to Costco yesterday at noon to get a few last minute items. It was a zoo. Not unruly but very crowded.

No ‘D’ batteries.
No paper towels.
No TP.
And no generators.

(Side note: To the point of inflation, a cut of meat Costco sells called “flap meat” started as a cheap cut but now is $6.29/pound!! Even London Broil was only $3.99/pound!)

To the latter, MasterPo overheard two guys arguing with a store employee about why don’t they have any generators! The employee said they might get a few tomorrow (today) but can’t guarantee it. The two guys were very angry. Idiots! What the heck did they expect two days before a hurricane? Why didn’t they buy a genie months or even years ago?

That reason is simple: Long Islander haven’t had the need for one for the most part in years.

MasterPo doesn’t blame people either. MasterPo doesn’t have a generator. That’s a debate MasterPo and Mrs. MasterPo have had for many years. It’s true that a good sized genie is expensive. Then there’s the cost and issues of storage of fuel. There is OPSEC to consider. And the practical consideration of having a unit large enough for basic needs (refrigerator, freezer, heat etc) yet not be a monster unit.

That evening MasterPo stopped at a local supermarket on the way home. Milk was almost gone as were eggs, OJ and cheese. About half the produce was gone and what was left was in poor shape. Bread, meat and canned goods were still plentiful though.

Moving on…

Spoke to a friend this morning. She said she tried to go to the supermarket yesterday for supplies. Couldn’t find any bottled water or flashlights. Then she asked what kind of supplies she should get.

No clue!

MasterPo told her canned soup, fruits and veggies, chicken and tuna. She thought that was a great idea. IMasterPoalso told her to fill up on gas and get some extra cash from the bank. She hadn’t even thought about that!

At work today a co-worker said she went to the local Target store yesterday. They were out of bottled water, flash lights and ‘D’ batteries too. Then she went to the local Ace Hardware. The line was out the door. She didn’t even bother trying to go in.

And a manager MasterPo works with has to rush around today to get his car’s tire patched instead of taking care of it weeks ago.

MasterPo just went to the Radio Shack near my office. They were out of all the crank style emergency radios. I did get a small AM/FM. I have a marine radio that gets NOAA so that should be good enough for now. But they still did have ‘D’ batteries.

Well, this is going to be interesting. At a minimum it will be a good test of MasterPo's preparation.

So far MasterPo thinks he is doing very well. MasterPo is short in the areas he knows about anyway and those that for family issues (i.e. Mrs. MasterPo) are a tough sell. But everything else seems to be falling into place well. MasterPo is very proud of his work on this and hope none is necessary.

See you on the other side.

It Finally Happened! (and Look Out Below!!)

MasterPo comes out of summer break as promised if something significant happens.

And it has.

Today, Friday August 5, 2011 is yet another date in an ever growing list of historical moments in American history. This even Standard & Poor's has downgraded the United States credit rating down from the world standard "risk free" AAA to AA+. While still not a bad rating per se, it isn't AAA!

First, MasterPo needs to point out that, yet again, something has happened which our esteemed President and his administration promised wouldn't happen if only we did (whatever-they-wanted).

Soon after taking office President Obama promised that if passed his massive stimulus package wasn't passed quote:

"this recession might linger for years. Our economy will lose 5 million more jobs. Unemployment will approach double digits. Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse." (Washington Post, February 5, 2009)

There was also the fiasco with "shovle ready jobs" that later were admitted never existed even at the time everyone from the President down insisted were ready to go.

Then, Fed chairman Ben Bernanke promised under oath in front of a Congressional committee that he would never buy Treasury bonds (i.e. monitize the debt). Today, 70% of Treasury bonds are purchased by the Federal Reserve! Normally 60% are purchased by foreign buyers at least.

Now, over the last month, we were told from the President down that if the debt ceiling wasn't passed and spending increased the U.S. credit rating would be reduced. So the ceiling was raised, money was spent. And the reduction now still happened!

This has very wide spread impacts. Not only the often mentioned cost of the U.S. borrowing money (which totally blows away all budget and debt and deficit projections!) but all other American (and some foreign) fiduciary institutions.

Banks, brokers, insurance companies - all that have AAA ratings because they hold AAA bonds which include mostly Treasuries. Now, how can you have a AAA rated company that holds less than AAA rated investments?!

And, as mentioned before, the AAA U.S. Treasury is (was?) the world standard for a "risk free" rate. Possibly now not any more! Which in turn leads to the further decline in importance of the American dollar on the world stage and as the world reserve currency.

Is this the end of the world? Likely not.

But there does come a point-of-no-return that even if the cliff is still some distance away you just can't turn or stop in time. This might be it.

Normally, MasterPo doesn't include videos in his articles. But this one from November 2010 is very prophetic.

Good luck to all of us.

Summer Break!

Summer Break Time!

MasterPo is going on summer break. If anything urgent comes to mind it will be posted.

Otherwise, have a safe and fun summer!

June 18, 2011

Solar – It is STILL a LOT of Money!!

Go green.
Save the planet.
End foreign oil dependence.
Yaddie, yaddie, yadda.

The song is played out – get a new tune.

Yes, MasterPo is angry.

The dream and the reality simply do not mesh!

MasterPo has written before about this and needs to repeat it: The true costs of private solar energy for a home simply do not make financial sense!

Recently MasterPo went to the website for Renewable Energy Long Island (www.renewableenergylongisland.org) for a current quote on adding solar power to the house.

Here’s how it went: (dollar amounts rounded):

For a 100% solar system the estimated installation cost is $70,000 (not including tax).
Expected estimated rebate from LIPA $17,500.
State tax credit $5,000.
Federal Tax Credit $16,000.Income tax to be paid on the rebate (you have to pay a tax on a rebate?!) $1,400.

Total out-of-pocket cost to MasterPo: $33,000

Further, it is estimated to add $56,000 in value to my house which might be added to MasterPo’s property tax (if MasterPo’s town chooses not to follow the New York State 15 year moratorium on taxing solar system installations – any bets?).

This is a bargain??

For a 75% solar system the numbers are:

Installation $53,000
Rebate $15,000
State tax credit $5,000
Federal tax credit $11,500
Income tax on rebate $1,400

Total out-of-pocket cost $23,000
Added property value $42,000

And for a 50% system:

Installation $35,000
Rebate $10,000

State tax credit $5,000
Federal tax credit $7,500
Income tax on rebate $1,400

Total out-of-pocket cost $14,000
Added property value $28,000

Where is this a good deal?!

Of course, the website “suggests” taking out a loan to finance the balance of the system. So now a person has to go into debt for all this too?

And the paperwork – Oh Lord! The paper work! – for filing for the utility company rebate and approves is a nightmare! Supposedly the contractor will help but still a bureaucrat ’s dream!

MasterPo has nothing against solar power per se. But come on!

In an economic crunch like now who in their right mind takes on costs and debt like this?!

You’re Going To Pay It Anyway So Shut Up!

Yahoo Finance articles aren’t anything special. Mostly just likes from the AP, Bloomberg, CNN Money etc. But it’s not for the articles that MasterPo reads them. The Yahoo Finance users’ comments are infinitely better (usually) and more insightful as to get the pulse of what people are thinking. Not a scientific survey by any means but given that commenters are financially savvy people (why else read Yahoo Finance?) it is a good indication of what people with some means are thinking.

MasterPo was reading an article recently, about the rise of oil and gasoline. Nothing remarkable there. But in the comments was this razor’s edge pearl of wisdom someone posted:

“You’re going to pay for it because you have no choice. So just quit whining!”

Truth.

Like millions of Americans, MasterPo has little choice but to pay pretty much whatever price per gallon for gasoline to get to work, the supermarket, take the kids to school and back, etc. But, also like millions of Americans, MasterPo’s wallet is faaaaaar from bottomless. Nor does MasterPo, unlike the Federal government, have a printing press in the basement. So that means in order to pay for gasoline (and heating oil) MasterPo will need to cut waaaaaay back on other expenditures.
Housing is a necessity. So is food.Medical is covered for the most part.

The rest is up for grabs.

Some examples:

Clothing – Gotta wear clothes but instead of a name brand, the El Cheapos will suffice. And will only replace worn clothing rather than be fashion/trend conscious.

Appliances and devices – Repair rather than replace as often as possible. Good for the repairman business, bad for the manufacturing, distribution and sales businesses (not to mention the loss of sales taxes).

Entertainment – Bye bye! At least the library is still free. And they have DVDs too.

Travel – Only for business and urgent personal events. Fewer (if any) pure pleasure trips, day trips, 3-day weekends etc.

Home remodeling – Also bye bye! Critical repairs and replacements only. MasterPo is sure contractors all over are hurting.

MasterPo is certainly not the only one to have to take on this stance. Maybe for the rest of life.

Now tell MasterPo how the economy is going to grow?!

Would YOU be a shelter? (Remembering Anne Frank)

Everyone loves a scapegoat.

Throughout history whenever something terrible happens either for reasons too complex for the common person to grasp or just the culmination of many other events people as a whole try to seek out someone, some group of people, to blame for the problem. Rarely do they see themselves as a cause (if not the root cause) of the problem. The fault is not in our stars but in ourselves.

Very often the culprit is determined to be people based on their religion, their ethnicity, their occupation, even their perceived wealth. This is not to say that yes, sometimes people of a certain group are directly involved in particular events than others (e.g. 9/11 wasn’t carried out by Eskimos or devout Wicca). But much more often it is a group or class of people totally unrelated to the events (often themselves suffering from the same affliction as their persecutors) who the wrath of the collective via mob rule comes down on like a landslide.

Events drive the process. A natural disaster like a flood or storm or earthquake is difficult to pin on a specific classification of people (unless one falls back on extreme religious doctrine to say it is Heavenly punishment). But the now-called “ma- made” disasters are tailor made for such scapegoating. An economic collapse, a terrorist attack, a WMD attack, an outbreak or plague, etc. feed right into the hands of those looking for someone to blame.

Sometimes a group of people have already been chosen as the source of problems and certain people are just waiting for some event to come along to put their blame and retribution plan into action. Others, never having considered the possibility of blaming someone when things were relatively good, can be easily manipulated into believing it is this or that group of people that are the cause once events go sour.

In a prolonged “man-made” SHTF event that leads to some level of WROL after the initial shock of events settles in a search for those to blame will undoubtedly start. Current events clearly show certain people are already being setup in the eyes of the world as being the cause for the world’s major problems. This too feeds into discrimination and racism already festering in many parts of the world, including the U.S. It wouldn’t take much to nudge the world over that thin line into full blown retribution.

MasterPoI happens to believe there is a very high chance of such events happening in the not too distant future (don’t like to make time frame predictions). If such should happen, would you be willing to stand up for what is right? Will you give aid to those being persecuted, attacked, maybe even hunted down literally?

The story of Anne Frank and her family in World War 2 is the most commonly referenced example of this (though not the only one; history before and since contains too many other examples). Starting in the summer of 1942 she and her family were hidden from the Nazis by their friends and neighbors. For two years they lived in seclusion until they family was betrayed, captured by the Nazis, and taken to concentration camps where most of her family, including Anne and her sister, died in 1945.

Would you offer such help to a person or family like that?
Would you provide them with food and water?
Would you get them medical care?
Would you provide real defense for them?
Would you help hide their identity?
Would you take them, or at least their children, to your BOL or someplace else of relative safety?
Would you resist the temptation of a reward or recognition for turning them in?
Would you take the risk of public ridicule, maybe ostracized, for standing to their defense?
Would you stand up and help them if they were attacked in the street? In their home?

Helping to provide for and shelter ourselves and our families during and after an SHTF/WROL event doesn’t change our humanity. Each of us has to make the determination ourselves, the risk to our own safety and that of our family, etc. It isn’t an easy question to wrestle with.

But what is the good of surviving if the price is to offer up your neighbor as a sacrifice for that survival? Or the innocent stranger walking by?

MasterPo offers no easy answer. Just food for thought.

A SPECIAL LADY - Let us never forget!

(Special Note: This is from an email forwarded to MasterPo. The original author is unknown. MasterPo has only changed the text formating slightly to better fit blog format.

Today marks the 44th anniversary of the start of the Six Day War on June 5, 1967 that liberated the old city of Jerusalem for the entire world to enjoy and worship from.)

LOOK at this lady - Let us never forget! The world hasn't just become wicked...it' s always been wicked. The prize doesn't always go to the most deserving.

Irena Sendler

There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an 'ulterior motive'. She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews (being German). Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids). She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises. During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.

After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was not selected. President Obama won one year before becoming President for his work as a community organizer for ACORN and Al Gore won also --- for a slide show on Global Warming.

In MEMORIAM - 63 YEARS LATER Please read the little cartoon carefully, it's powerful. Then read the comments at the end. I'm doing my small part by forwarding this message. I hope you'll consider doing the same.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended.

This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the millions of Jews, Russians, Christians and Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated!

Now, more than ever, with Iran, and others, claiming the HOLOCAUST to be 'a myth'. It's imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who would like to do it again.

Fears From My Father – Part 1

MasterPo’s parents were second-generation American. When MasterPo was growing up MasterPo’s parents told stories that had been related from their parents about long lost (in many cases literally) family from “the old country” that didn’t come over to America.

Then as now (maybe more so then than now) it was common for one or two groups from an overall family to immigrate to America. Then, once established here, send money back home to pay for bringing other members of the extended family over to America. For most the plan as anticipated. But some family members back in “the old country” didn’t use the money sent to come to America. Instead they bought more land, opened or expanded businesses, retooled existing businesses and farms, etc. Not squandered or lost but just not used for the intended purpose of bringing the rest of the family over to America.

That alternate scenario worked – for awhile.

Then the Nazis came.
(And for those on the other side of the boarder, Stalin.)

The family tree lost many branches. Whole segments, whole ancestor communities were gone.

It’s understandable in a way. No one wants to leave what they know and are comfortable with for the unknown. And that was long before National Socialism grew, though anti-Semitism was always alive and well anyway. So when push came to shove they didn’t leave. And in the end lost everything, often including their lives.

Many probably fell victim to the “normalcy bias” that nothing bad can every fully happen. But it did.

Growing up, going to relative’s for Break The Fast or Passover eventually the topic of conversation would turn briefly to this or that act of anti-Semitism. MasterPo’s parents, aunts and uncles would say “Yes, it could happen again here too” (meaning in America).

MasterPo isn’t making any predictions about Nazi uprisings in America. And a level of anti-Semitism has always been a factor in American society since even colonial times.

However, today we live in a world that more and more seems to once again repeating history and blaming the Jews for the worlds’ ills. Right now most attention is being focused on Israel and the Middle East. MasterPo does not have a good feeling about that outcome. But when (not if!) the same problems and the violence come to Main Street, U.S.A. once again the Jews will be blamed. It would not take much for violent anti-Semitism to erupt in America. It has happened before (see Crown Heights, Brooklyn, August 1991 as one such example).

MasterPo’s father’s fears may yet come true in his son’s life time.
